In 2016, exponentially increasing deal sizes characterised the Spanish M&A market. This culminated in a 38% jump in the value of the M&A market, despite volumes remaining steady. 2017 started with promise, as there was 11% more deals by volume in Q1 2017 versus the same time last year. There have also been some high-profile Spanish IPOs so far in 2017, which were among the largest listings globally for the period - Unicaja Banco SA, Gestamp Automocion SA, Neinor Homes SA, Prosegur Cash SA.

Spanish Deal Values and Volumes

Despite significantly lower announced M&A volumes across Europe, according to Merrill’s proprietary data, we’ve seen growth in projects so far this year compared to 2016. What’s more, our pipeline is up over 25 percent year on year. Spain and the wider Southern European market for Merrill has seen much growth this year, implying the M&A upswing will continue.

Key positive trends for Spanish sectors in H1 2017 versus H1 2016:

• Energy and Technology deal volume overtook H1 2016 in H1 2017
• Technology deal value in H1 shot up, far ahead of H1 2016
• Business Services deal value remained ahead of H1 2016 in the same period 2017
