Merrill Corporation, Clark Hill PLC and Seyfarth Shaw LLP Present Webinar to More Than 2,000 Attorneys in Support of the Education Goals of the Seventh Circuit Court Electronic Discovery Pilot Program

Educational effort covers the mechanics of eDiscovery law and the Pilot Program Principles, and seeks to improve understanding and cooperation in legal discovery procedures.

St. Paul, Minn. — Merrill Corporation (www.merrillcorp.com), a leading global provider of technology-enabled services for the legal, financial, health care, real estate and other corporate markets, today announced that attorney Heidi J.K. Fessler, senior director of client development for Merrill, led a panel overview of electronic discovery practices for attorneys who practice in the Seventh Circuit Court’s jurisdiction. Attorneys Daniel Graham of Clark Hill and Ronald Lipinski of Seyfarth Shaw joined Fessler on the panel and led topics covering Pilot Program Principles.

Merrill, in conjunction with Clark Hill and Seyfarth Shaw, developed the continuing legal education (CLE) course, “What Everyone Should Know about the Mechanics of eDiscovery,” partnering with the Seventh Circuit Court Electronic Discovery Pilot Program. It was presented on April 6, 2011 to more than 2,000 attorneys who participated in the Webinar. The CLE outlined the importance of identifying, preserving and producing relevant electronically stored information (ESI) in court cases, and suggested best practices for handling that information.

The Seventh Circuit Court’s Pilot Program is leading the way for other courts in the development of effective electronic discovery practice. Education is a major goal of the program—aimed at raising the bar within the legal community regarding knowledge of eDiscovery procedures required by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, case law and the Standing Order implementing the Pilot Program Principles. These Principles are designed to improve the discovery process by incentivizing “cooperative exchange of information on evidence preservation and discovery.”

“We were honored to partner with Clark Hill and Seyfarth Shaw to advance the Pilot Program led by Chief Judge Holderman and Magistrate Judge Nolan in developing and presenting this information to attorneys practicing within the Seventh Circuit,” said Mark Rossi, senior vice president of Merrill Corporation. “Merrill has long been an industry leader in developing innovative and cost-effective ways to help attorneys, their clients and the court contend with the explosion of ESI. Merrill is committed to ongoing education of all participants to help meet the court’s goals of less contentious, more effective discovery.”
